Abstract

Sindh is a land of Sufis. There are two main thoughts of Sufism i.e. Wahadatul Wajood and Wahadatul Shuhood and within these thoughts different orders exist in Sindh. A part from Sufism, Vedanta & different religions are also followed in Sindh.

There is also impact of  Guru Nanak School of thought in Sindh. Poetry is a powerful medium of expression and preaching of the Sufi thoughts all over Sub Continent. Shah Latif, Sachal Sarmast, Saami, Nanik Yousif and other poets are prominent examples in this regard.

Bhai Chain Rai Saami is included in the triangle of Sindhi poetry/poets which is known as Shah, Sachal and Saami. Nanik Yousif's original name is Nazar Muhammad Khokar. Because of his affiliation with Baba Guru Nanak, Sachal Sarmast gave him the title of  Nanik.

Both poets (Nanik Yousif and Saami) belong to the eighteenth & nineteenth Centuries.

Saami and Nanik Yousif  were also regular visitors of Amritsar. Both the poets spread message of love, brotherhood and interfaith harmony through their poetry.

In this article, the main focus will be on the poetry and personality of Nanik Yousif.

Note: Due to difference of Phonetics in the word “Nanak” in Sindhi language, a different spelling is being used for Nanik yousif (Guru Nanak & Nanik Yousif)
